The 10-Minute Trip That Turns Into an Island Adventure

Not just for the gram...

You know those trips where you leave your hotel thinking you're just going somewhere for a few minutes—and somehow end up having an entirely different kind of day?

That can happen pretty easily in St. Vincent & the Grenadines.

One minute you're looking for somewhere to grab lunch, meet a friend, check out a beach, or simply get out of the house. The next thing you know, you're looking at a waterfall, walking through a historic tunnel, stopping for a photograph, or discovering a little corner of the island you didn't know existed.

That's part of what makes exploring mainland St. Vincent so interesting.

The big attractions are easy to find. But sometimes the best adventures begin when you simply decide to go a little farther.

Start With the Road

St. Vincent isn't an island where every interesting place announces itself with a giant sign.

As you travel north, the landscape changes. Villages give way to hills, the coastline appears and disappears between bends in the road, and lush vegetation becomes part of the scenery.

Then there are the places you may not have put on your original itinerary.

Take Black Point Heritage and Recreational Park, for example.

The park's main attraction is the historic Black Point Tunnel, a roughly 300-foot passage constructed in the early 1800s as part of the sugar industry's transportation network. Today, the site combines history, coastal scenery, a black-sand beach, gardens, recreational space, and picnic facilities.

It isn't necessarily the kind of place someone imagines when they hear "Caribbean vacation."

And that's precisely the point.

Sometimes the most interesting stops aren't the ones you've already seen 500 times on Instagram.

Stay adventurous.
